“It’s not just about the tasks I accomplish; it’s about the profound sense of purpose and empowerment that comes from knowing I am reclaiming my agency and contributing to a brighter future for myself and society.”

“When I arrived in Ireland, I was eager to improve my English skills. I discovered a conversation club on Fridays in Cork Volunteer Centre and decided to join. Through this club, I became aware of the Cork Volunteer Centre and registered as a volunteer. It was a novel experience for me, as such organizations weren’t common in my home country. Every Friday, I engaged with diverse individuals, learning about Irish culture and the art of volunteering.

“My volunteer duties have been diverse. I’ve contributed to various projects such as painting the Welcome English Centre in Cork, gardening, participating in the St. Patrick’s Day parade and making crafts, and utilizing my graphic design skills to create certificates and banners for the centre. I’ve also been involved in events like the Cork Film Festival and the creation of a dragon for the Halloween parade through Cork City Link. The opportunity to engage in such varied tasks has been incredibly fulfilling for me.

“Volunteering holds a special place in my heart because it allows me to make a tangible difference in society while simultaneously embarking on a journey of personal growth. Beyond the fulfilment of contributing positively to my community, volunteering has been an integral part of my healing process. After enduring the hardships of living in Afghanistan under Taliban rule, where opportunities for women were severely restricted, volunteering at this centre has been a beacon of hope for me. It’s not just about the tasks I accomplish; it’s about the profound sense of purpose and empowerment that comes from knowing I am reclaiming my agency and contributing to a brighter future for myself and society. Through volunteering, I’ve discovered resilience, forged meaningful connections, and regained a sense of belonging in a world where I once felt marginalized.

“One of my fondest memories is the day we painted the Welcome English Centre. It was my first time participating in such a large-scale painting project with a group. Witnessing the transformation of the space into something vibrant and welcoming was truly rewarding.

This role aligns perfectly with my desire to make a positive contribution while immersing myself in a new culture. It brings me immense happiness to know that I am making a difference and building connections within my community.”

This National Volunteering Week, we’re celebrating the diversity of volunteers who make Ireland what it is. No matter your age, race, abilities, or status, we honor your place in the community and the volunteering that you, uniquely, do.
