“Aware’s vision deeply resonated with me, and I am excited to bring my lived experience and dedication to inclusivity to ensure all communities in Ireland have access to the support and information they need for their mental health and wellbeing.”

Melissa is on the board for Aware, an organisation providing free support, education and information services to people impacted by anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder and related mood conditions.

“I was lucky enough to get a place in the Future Board Leaders programme which is co-designed by Boardmatch and The Leadership Academy (The Wheel). This programme was designed to increase the engagement of traditionally underrepresented voices on boards by providing training, support and a network for these voices and finding a charity board match! They also actively work with associated charities who are seeking to diversify their trustee in a supported way.

“As a board member, my primary responsibilities include collaborating with fellow board members to provide strategic oversight for Aware. This entails actively engaging in discussions and decision-making processes aimed at guiding the organisation towards its goals. Additionally, board members play a crucial role in supporting the executive staff who manage the day-to-day operations of the charity.

“My favourite part of volunteering is having an opportunity to meet new people from all walks of life! I absolutely love speaking to people and hearing their stories. I’m always up for making a new friend!

“While I’m only just at the beginning of my journey as a board member with Aware, one standout memory is the Christmas gathering for volunteers. It was such a wonderful evening spent mingling with fellow board members, dedicated staff and the incredible volunteers who deliver the vital services offered by Aware. This experience underscored the strong sense of community and shared purpose within Aware.

“My advice is if there’s something that you like, whether that’s meeting new people, working with computers or being out in nature, I guarantee that there’s a volunteer role which will allow you to do that. Even if you’re not sure about what you like, volunteering is an excellent way to find out!

“Aware was a perfect fit for me because I was looking for charity where I could contribute to supporting and raising awareness of mental health and wellbeing, especially to communities where such topics are still stigmatised. Aware’s vision deeply resonated with me, and I am excited to bring my lived experience and dedication to inclusivity to ensure all communities in Ireland have access to the support and information they need for their mental health and wellbeing.”

This National Volunteering Week, we’re celebrating the diversity of volunteers who make Ireland what it is. No matter your age, race, abilities, or status, we honor your place in the community and the volunteering that you, uniquely, do.
