“Volunteering allows me to set aside personal worries and focus on bringing positive energy to others, which fosters a sense of belonging and boosts wellbeing.”

Iryna volunteers with Cork Community Volunteers.

“Upon arriving to Dublin from Ukraine in May 2022, I was welcomed by volunteers who aided newcomers. Inspired by their warmth and assistance, I sought to contribute to this welcoming community. I discovered about Cork Volunteer Centre online on my way from Dublin to Cork and immediately applied to assist with English/Ukrainian translations. Their supportive team embraced me, and I began volunteering, talking to Adam, Gosia, Ciara about opportunities and couple of days later participated in my first event – Ocean to City race.

“I think the best way in which I can describe Community Volunteering is that we add colours into casual flow of the days in Cork, assisting with running various events throughout the year such as Africa Day, Cork Film Festival, St Patrick’s Parade, etc. We are also available to provide help in emergency situations which may occur. My responsibilities as a volunteer are always different and I can’t remember any two shifts which would be the same. They include working with event organisers to make sure they have everything they need, providing guidance to visitors and raising their mood, and responding to unexpected circumstances.

“On my volunteering work as a befriender on coffee mornings in the Community Centre, I help people practice their English in a fun and informal way. We split in groups and encourage people to speak as much as possible, engaging them in different exercises and games.

“I find it hard to pinpoint just one favorite aspect of volunteering because I enjoy the combination of factors involved. Meeting people from diverse backgrounds and hearing their stories broadens my perspective and helps me grow personally. Volunteering allows me to set aside personal worries and focus on bringing positive energy to others, which fosters a sense of belonging and boosts wellbeing. Additionally, I continually develop and enhance my skills across various areas through volunteering activities

“It’s tough to choose just one, but a standout memory is returning to our coffee mornings after a busy few weeks away. The warm welcome from the team and attendees lit up my heart and I immediately had inspiration to get into the mood and put more effort for another great activity!. We reminisced about past events on our mornings, celebrated the progress of our regulars in English and life, and brainstormed ideas for future events. The smiles on everyone’s faces still warm me, even on rainy days.

“I know that many people have fears that they lack required skills to get started. But don’t let that hold you back from volunteering. Regardless of your perceived shortcomings, take a deep breath and dive in. Mistakes are natural, and no one will judge you. Focus on the invaluable experiences and memories you’ll gain, which will far outweigh any initial fears. Ask yourself, will these fears matter in five years? Instead, focus on the friendships, support, and skills you’ll acquire along the way.”

This National Volunteering Week, we’re celebrating the diversity of volunteers who make Ireland what it is. No matter your age, race, abilities, or status, we honor your place in the community and the volunteering that you, uniquely, do.
