Brian’s story is taken from a wonderful collection of volunteer stories in Waterford organised by the Waterford Volunteer Centre to share the powerful impact of migrants in their community. You can read more of the stories here!
“My name is Brian Marijeni and am 51 years old. I migrated with my family (wife and 2 kids) from Zimbabwe in southern Africa 3 years ago.
“I attended Spraoi 2022 as a volunteer and it was mindblowing. I got to know Irish friends and amazing stuff. I also volunteer with ALONE befriending and telephone support.
“Volunteering helped me integrate well into the community and networking with a lot of people. I gained a lot of knowledge and experience.
“I volunteered in honour of my late mother who passe away 2 years ago, and I failed to attend the funeral back home. I felt I should carry on with her legacy as she was always helping the under privileged in our local community in Zimbabwe. I learnt from my mother that serving humanity is the best we can do in life.”
This National Volunteering Week, we’re celebrating the diversity of volunteers who make Ireland what it is. No matter your age, race, abilities, or status, we honor your place in the community and the volunteering that you, uniquely, do.
