“I ADORE baking and I get to give back to those who might need a little home baking.”

Aisling bakes for Consider It Cakes, an organisation that provides birthday and other celebration cakes for people in direct provision or people who are unhoused.

“I’m Aisling – I’m a Senior Manager for a large US organisation, I travel a lot and work full time – so I find it hard to find time to consistently give back to my community.

“But when I found Consider It Cakes it felt like the dream combination – I ADORE baking and I get to give back to those who might need a little home baking. The flexibility really helps – so when I have the time I can bake, but there is no pressure if I am away and can’t support. This flexibility allows me to support my local community and still keep my own work and life commitments, as well as getting to do something I love – baking – a win win!

“However, my biggest surprise was learning that what is simply just a cake to me… means so much more to the recipients – their sincere gratitude and sometimes overwhelm that someone they don’t know took time to home bake something JUST for them – brings it home how much volunteering means. Cakes and treats are part of many of our daily lives or celebrations – but for those who either don’t have facilities or resources to bake to be able to sense the love and care from home baked treats makes this volunteering so worthwhile – of everyone.”

This National Volunteering Week, we’re celebrating the diversity of volunteers who make Ireland what it is. No matter your age, race, abilities, or status, we honor your place in the community and the volunteering that you, uniquely, do.
