Abdul is a volunteer in Dublin who has built a diverse network through volunteering with projects like Together For Better and East Wall For All. He shares how volunteering has helped him make good friends, improved his mental health, and made him feel at home in his community.

“I was welcomed warmly when I arrived in Dublin six months ago. I really appreciate all those who made me feel at home and gave me their time, love, care, and everything beyond my expectations. The entire network that I have made so far is through volunteering. I have made a lot of good friends and my network is so diverse, I love it.

“I volunteer as part of the Together For Better project, and I volunteer as an English language teacher for migrants. I have also volunteered with East Wall For All.

“Volunteering makes me happy. It helps to distract me from overthinking and depression. And most importantly, it has helped me make a lot of good friends. I love people and worked my whole life serving people. This is the best part of my life, to serve people and work for them.

“Thanks to volunteering, I feel at home now. I am part of the community.”

This National Volunteering Week, we’re celebrating the kindness, compassion, and generosity of volunteers like Abdul.
